When you start the year with a book that has an enigmatic writing style and storytelling by one of the greatest writers, the bar for the rest of the year is automatically raised. I guess I don't have to talk about how famous the author or her books are. They all speak for themselves. But for readers yet to explore her works, here is my best possible summary of the book.

Macon Dead junior alias Milkman, a name given to him for a strange reason, born to wealthy black parents in America, realises that he is not like other black children. He chooses a free and sophisticated life while his friend, Guitar, takes up the route of rebellion. When Milkman abandons Hagar, he Takes pride in being the man that made her crazy out of love. His father was a rich man who loved nothing else except for his riches, not even his wife, Ruth. Milkman discovers weird secrets about his mother, Ruth and his aunt, Pilate. Every time he tries to uncover their secrets, he learns more about himself and his father. In an absolute need to understand his family dynamics, he sets out to learn about his ancestors. What awaits him is the answer to all that is needed.

Toni Morrison's writing is pure magic. The enthralling storytelling grows on its readers. It sucks you in and traps you in the fictional world until you realise you've finished the book. It is an ethereal experience.

The women in her stories are always unique and quintessentially feministic. They are brave and self-sufficient.

This book has some brilliant quotes and lines from the author. Apart from writing a remarkable story and many complicated characters, her rhapsodic way of making the characters project themselves is brilliant. This book is nothing short of phenomenal and an absolute literary miracle.

Give it some time if you don't see everything fall into its place as you start the book. Let it grow on you and see the experience for yourself. I will not suggest you drop whatever you are doing right away and start this book. But I would definitely recommend you resort to any of her books over time for the exquisite experience.

P.S. Setting my life goal to read all of her books.

MY REVIEW: 5/5
