Nigeria Jones, a black American in Philadelphia, is the daughter of Kofi Sankofa, a radical activist and separatist trying to fight white supremacy. On the surface, his practices look normal for someone who has been through oppression and racial abuse. But deeper down, his methods are aggressive and no better than an extremist. He believes in homeschooling rather than sending his children and people to schools run by Americans. He enforces rules like veganism, polygamy and marrying within their group to connect to their ancestors and avoid American practices.

Nigeria Jones starts questioning his practices when she begins her search for her estranged mother. With every secret she uncovers about her mother, she also discovers uncomfortable truths about her father. She learns that her mother's dream was to send her to Philly friends high school, run by the Quackers group, and she puts up a fight against her father to make her mother's dream come true.

I loved reading this book throughout, and the flow of writing was so smooth and magical. Each character had an arc that was unique from the others, and Nigeria's mother was my favourite because of the mystery surrounding her and her strong and wilful nature. The plot was gripping and suspenseful except for a few instances where it felt repetitive. The intellectual discussion between Nigeria, her friends and her classmates did not look like it was between a few teenagers; rather, it was highly rational and only reflected the author's wisdom and research.

An important and must read book on black history and don’t forget to add this on your never ending TBR. You will not regret it.

My review: 4.5/5
