Where are my reader friends who feel Indian fantasy writers haven't been able to nail it right yet? Take note; your search might very well end here as this book falls right in the epicentre. Honestly, I never thought this book would turn out so good as I experimented with reading something out of my preferred zone. But did it turn out to be an accidental discovery of the best fantasy read of 2023? Yes, it is right there at this moment.
After dealing with his midlife crisis, Dhruv returns to his parental home in Raukipur. While he contemplates his past life and the decisions he made, he accidentally stumbles upon his mother's treasure, a crown with a missing jewel in the centre. Looking through it, he gets teleported to the universe, where he is welcomed by Dristi, the sense of vision who shows him the life of Ghriz, a girl with supervision. Later, he meets Sparsha, the sense of touch who shows him the life of Mong, a blind girl with magical healing powers.
Dhruv later realises why he was shown about Ghriz and Mong, and he tries to connect the dots with his present. He understands that Dristi and Sparsha spoke to him because they chose him for this life, and he has a mission to accomplish. To emerge successfully in his mission, he must convince his ex-wife, Juthika, to hand him over one of his priced possessions. But will he be able to do it?
As I have discussed earlier, this book came as a surprise and sweet shock of how interesting it turned out to be. The story of Ghriz and among was absorbing and left me asking for more. The concept of having a fantasy based on different senses itself was very amusing to me, and it was so well written. Dhruv and Juthika's story was compelling, and given the ending, I expect a sequel and would definitely read it too. If you love fantasy and would like to explore Indian fantasy, then this is a must-read.
MY REVIEW: 5/5
