BOOK REVIEW

Imagine Waking up to a warm bowl of your favourite soup on a rainy day with birds chirping around your balcony; your mother prepares your favourite meal on a Sunday - be it biryani with cucumber raita or a steaming pot of daal khichdi or a comforting bowl of white sauce pasta; the warmth of an evening bowl of Maggi or ramen (whatever you want to call it) with a cup of tea or coffee while reading your favourite book and resting your sore and tired legs into a tub of lukewarm water. How does this all sound to you? Comfort, right? That's precisely how I felt reading this book.

It's about an ordinary American family living their everyday life among the chaos and love. It's a family saga spanning four generations that talks about family issues like acceptance of ageing, having a problem child, living with Alzheimer's, coping with the death of a family member, living in a dysfunctional family and so on. I am not writing a review of the plot here because it isn't actually a story that can be reviewed. It isn't filled with suspense, and there is no damsel in distress. In a world that thrives on mystery, twists and turns and cliches, somebody had to write about the mundane stuff that will depict any typical family and yet speak to you at its fullest.

When I finished reading this book, I felt serene yet distraught - a feeling I could not explain. Imagine having your home filled with relatives, friends and well-wishers offering condolences for your family's loss. There are a few mourning, a few for the food or drinks, and a few looking for memories to share. There is noise and silence simultaneously, and when they all leave at once, you are just left with you and your family members to deal with it. You just look at each other, not knowing what to say or do, and a deafening silence takes over. That's how I would like to compare the feeling with. I did not want my 460-page book to leave me so soon, and it felt like a personal loss that I had no more words left to read from the book.

I cannot imagine myself not reading her other books now, and I feel everyone who hasn't read this yet is missing out a lot.
