Wayel Kati by Linthoi Chanu is a  Manipuri mythological folklore. Wayel kati -  the scissors of justice get stolen, and its seven protectors transform into demigods in the human realm to restore it where it belongs to avoid chaos. Laiba, the chief protector, helps Iwan, the boy king, assemble other protectors in the central kingdom, including Sana, the mother supreme and others. Their quest is disturbed at various points, and they fight against the odds to achieve their goal. There are also personal goals among the major ones which impede their pursuit. Did they succeed in finding the Wayel kati, and what happens to the protectors in the end? Read this to find out more.


The book was very enjoyable and introduced me to various Manipuri cultures and ideologies. There are dragons, monsters, mythological beasts, multiple realms, witches, magical powers and demigods, making the story move like a movie. The amusing illustrations in the book also draw attention and make it easier for the readers to maintain focus and follow it. I only wish the ending was more straightforward than going in a loop, and a few editing errors could have been avoided. Nevertheless, this North-east Indian voice must be read to understand its core values and history.

'Congratulations on your promotion and transfer. We are looking forward to your full commitment to us. Do get back to this letter at the earliest with your answer.' Read the crafted piece of paper. Ahmed's parents were delighted and jumping with joy. They were chanting 'Alhamdulillah' fervently while Aliza stood confused. She could not make anything of this news because Ahmed's promotion meant everything to her. But his transfer would only mean that Aliza must stay back with her in-laws while he would visit only during weekends. She would happily do so, too, if not for her unsupportive mother-in-law.   Aliza is the middle child of her family, with two older siblings and two younger ones. She did not always get her parents' attention because the oldest or the youngest sibling often stole it. She was mostly brought up by her oldest sister, Razia, who made sure she bathed, ate, and went to school on time. After Razia's marriage, her next older sibling Fahim brought home his wife, who had sworn to taunt Aliza all her life.
