BOOK REVIEW

This book provides a wonderful insight into the times of the Assam insurgency and agitation that led to a lot of mob killing, underground activities, and political upheaval. The story revolves around an unemployed Sriman who is trying to set his life right. He one day witnesses a gruesome murder on his way back home, and everything changes suddenly for him. His life takes a U-turn, affecting him mentally and emotionally.

The book is written in two parts, the first in the third person perspective about the insurgency in Assam and the next in the first person pov, where Sriman learns about Buddhism and the Tibetan struggle from a chance encounter. He stumbles upon the localites and tourists while he stays in the Himalayas and rediscovers his life purpose. This book was such a delight to read, although it was based on heavy themes.

This book is definitely one of the finest translations I have read in recent times, ignoring the minor editing errors. It almost felt like I was reading the original script. The story was deep and kept me on edge, and I wanted to get to the end so badly. The Assamese culture and practices were a delight to read. If there's something that's mildly inconvenient in the book, it is the glaring women written by men. Otherwise, it was perfect and convincing, and my heart almost dropped in the end. I would recommend it to people who are looking for good translated books and those based in Assam.
