FAVOURITE SERIES/ MOVIES OF 2024

have spoken enough about my favourite books this year over and over again. And for a change, let me talk about my favourite shows and movies of the year. I agree I am not a cinephile. I resort to movies rarely and like only a handful, especially this year. Below are some of the movies or series that managed to keep my attention and become my favourite.

1. THE WILD ROBOT - ENGLISH (ANIMATED MOVIE)

Change is inevitable as the world is slowly moving towards AI. Our movies and series also now feature more robots and dystopian worlds than before. I thought The Wild Robot would be just another film on why robots would be helpful or harmful for our future. But boy, was I so wrong? I loved being wrong here, by the way. Though change is always bound to happen, specific emotions, particularly motherhood, are irreplaceable. Highlighting the importance of peace and companionship, this movie focuses not just on AI but also climate change, the concept of a planet for all, love and compassion. It's a definite favourite of the year. The Wild Robot is available on Amazon Prime with a rating of 8.3/10.

2. MAHARAJA - TAMIL (MOVIE)

This one was unconventional and out of my liking because of its gore and explicit scenes. However, this movie is an exception because of the theme it explores. It started innocently with a man filing a complaint for his missing bucket, Laxmi. Tired of his antics, the police decide to use his innocence and stupidity, but only he is fighting for something bigger and cruel. One of the most perfectly edited narratives with visually challenging scenes, this story will remain with its audience for a long time. This movie is available and is most watched on Netflix India.

3. MAHARAJ - HINDI (MOVIE)

I had no idea there was a movie featuring Amir Khan’s son until I watched it. There was no buzz surrounding the film, and there were no promotions doing rounds on social media because the actor could have easily done it if he wanted to. In this movie, a man’s intelligence threatens a self-proclaimed baba, tricking his followers and engaging in questionable activities. The protagonist’s struggles and efforts to prove himself are very believable, and the execution was done well without hurting anybody’s sentiments. The stellar cast with fresh faces, the dialogues and the concept were a recipe for a blockbuster and impressed me thoroughly. Catch up with this movie on Netflix.

4. CHUTNEY SAMBAR - TAMIL (WEB SERIES)

A Tamil web series starring comedian Yogi Babu, who has a roadside food stall, finds that his estranged father has another family elsewhere and is forced to visit him to unravel a few secrets. Upon arrival, he discovers his father is no more, and his new family is unwelcoming except for his half-brother. Set in the picturesque hills of Ooty, this lighthearted tale explores heavy themes from a more straightforward perspective. Featuring no big stars, this did very well and is a must-watch. You can watch this series on Disney + Hotstar.

5. YOUNG SHELDON SEASON FINALE - ENGLISH (SERIES)

I love geeky series, except for Modern Family, which is a complete package. I have been following Young Sheldon since I loved the Big Bang theory. I wanted to see what the makers did with Sheldon’s past, and I can say that no other prequels/ spin-offs have done justice to the original series as much as this one did. Every backstory was justified, and the parallels were managed beautifully. This year, the season finale, the 7th season, came out. The ending was poignant and fitting to the original version. It’s one of the most unforgettable endings any season had, including TBBT. This series is available on both Amazon prime and Netflix.

6. RAGHU THATHA - TAMIL (MOVIE)

It is a lighthearted female-centric movie expressing a writer’s resistance against Hindi imposition and stereotypes set by society. I hadn’t laughed so much watching a film like this one. The struggles of a female pursuing writing as a passion in the 80s and 90s were brilliantly showcased. The sisterhood in this story was one to be cherished. A particular scene where the protagonist rises for herself against patriarchy when she is about to get married stuck with me even after the movie ended. Raghu Thatha is available on Zee 5 app for free.

This marks the end of the list but I am sure there are many more movies and series that are yet to be explored. Have you watched any of these?
